A regional focus on local and independent business Prompts a National Trend

The 10% Shift is a New England-wide grassroots movement of citizens, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits that make support for local business into a tangible and replicable goal across the country.  The movement works to shift 10% or more of annual budgets from non-local businesses to locally owned and independent businesses.  This change will keep a larger share of dollars in the New England region, stimulate the local multiplier, create thousands of new jobs, and spur a fundamental transformation of the New England economy.  In Spring 2009, Executive Director Joe Grafton set across the country to share the success of the 10% campaign to communities far and wide, calling the journey, "Shift Across America".

Their Description:

Mission Statement of the 10% Shift
The 10% Shift is a New England-wide grassroots movement of citizens, businesses, government agencies, and nonprofits working to shift 10% or more of our annual budget from non-local businesses to locally owned and independent businesses.

This modest but important change will keep a larger share of dollars in our region, stimulate the local multiplier, create thousands of new jobs, and spur a fundamental transformation of the New England economy.

The 10% Shift Vision
The 10% Shift envisions a strong and vibrant New England economy that promotes localized economic development and fosters sustainable and inclusive communities.

  • The New England local movement grows to include over thirty local business organizations in all six states with a collective total of 5,000 business members that are allied with local  nonprofit organizations and government agencies that have made a permanent commitment to local procurement.
  • More than 100,000 individuals have signed the 10% Shift pledge.
  • Wherever you go in New England, the 10% Shift message is visible in digital and print media, in local businesses and on the web, and is widely understood to be a positive and personal strategy toward local economic independence.
  • The 10% Shift empowers all residents to generate substantial economic activity, create meaningful and good-paying jobs, and build healthy communities.
  • The 10% Shift builds on New England's cultural and economic heritage, with a strong emphasis on self-reliance, local identity, and grassroots leadership.
