The Medford Wind Turbine is the first commercial-scale wind turbine installed at a municipal school in Massachusetts.
The Medford wind turbine supplies 10% of the McGlynn schools electrical needs. The wind turbine will save the city an estimated $25,000 a year.
The future plans for the turbine include making sure that the turbine will provide Medford with clean energy for many years to come.
Mayor Michael McGlynn created the Medford Clean Energy Committee (MCEC) in January 2004 to augment the city's effort to become a municipal leader in the use of clean power.
The funding for the project includes $200,000 from the state to help in the construction of the Medford wind turbine, $250,000 grant from the Large On site Renewable, Initiative of the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, a $100,000 grant from the Mass Energy Consumers Alliance, and also the city receives a $250,000 grant from MTC Large On-site Renewable Initiative for the design and construction of a 100-kilowatt wind turbine at the McGlynn School.
